Do independent retailers deserve to survive? I believe they do, but not simply because they're independent. They deserve to survive because they bring something to their communities that large chains simply can't replicate.

A World Without Independents

Imagine a world where the only shopping option is a corporate conglomerate. Every store is the same. Assortment doesn't match the neighborhood. Merchandising is stale across the board, hyperlocal never makes it onto the shelf, and there's no catering to the community around you.

Sounds incredibly boring, right?

The Odds Are Stacked Against Independents

Well, independent grocery retailers have the odds stacked against them right now:

Corporations are growing quickly and expanding their reach. Discount retailers like Aldi and Walmart are pushing into smaller communities with updated stores, aggressive marketing, sharp décor, deep assortment, and steep discounts. Meanwhile, consolidation among the bigger players continues at a rapid pace.

Ever-increasing costs, inflation, and a difficult labor market have made it harder than ever to operate a successful independent location.

To make matters worse, the big guys have been using operational AI for years, streamlining processes to offset difficult labor conditions.

Three Fronts Where Independents Can Win

For independents to thrive in today's market, they need to win on three specific fronts:

  1. You must promote and merchandise to your neighborhood. Local products and vendor partners make independents maneuverable where the big guys remain “regionally local” differentiate your hyperlocal products in ad and display will give you an advantage. Knowing the needs of a neighborhood demographic is key. Go big on those needs! Whether Organic, Natural, prepared foods or another specialty category know your customers and go all in.

  2. You must win the fresh perimeter to have a shot at a total shop. If you degrade to a partial shop or dinner stop only, basket size and profit diminish quickly. The big guy’s weakness is in fresh… Pre-pack Meat, thaw and sell bakery, limited lunch selection, limited or mass-produced cut fruit are all areas of easy, low hanging fruit that independents can master and gain an edge. Train your team to be experts in their fresh areas! The guy that changed your oil at the big box store last week is stacking your broccoli today, that makes it easy to beat them!

  3. You must Leverage operational AI. Independents can use tech better than the big guys! They use in-house cookie cutter technology, and the inexperienced and untrained big box employees use it blindly. Find an operational AI that is multifaceted and purpose built by retailers for retail. An AI that covers order forecasting, production planners, pricing, ad writing, and period end inventory across all departments that can give you an instant boost in conditions and margin. One that’s built for independent retailers like EmpowerFresh AI. (I know, shameless plug) but you guys need the help!

    RealTime

Independents also have the advantage of pulling the trigger quickly and offsetting tech disadvantages without it going through a 3-year board of director and c-level approval tour. Just don’t get stuck in the past or in slow decision making. Bolt on AI tech is an easy ad on to your existing systems. Only your data feeds are required.

Worth Fighting For

Independents can thrive against the big-box retailers if they're smart and shrewd about it. And honestly, a world without them sounds boring, and disastrous for customers. Think about the rich traditions and family histories that would be lost if they disappeared.

Without independents, who's going to keep pricing in check and keep things local? The Kroger/Albertsons deal was a close call, and it should serve as a reminder of what shopping could look like without that alternative.

So the next time you have a choice, consider supporting your local independent grocer. You're not just buying groceries. You're investing in your community.
